Clinical, laboratory and imaging features of adult tuberculous meningitis at Bach Mai Hospital

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the clinical and subclinical characteristics of adult tuberculous meningitis patients at Bach Mai hospital from 2016-2019.

Methods: Cross-sectional study of 33 patients diagnosed with tuberculous meningitis by automated PCR technique and Gen-Xpert at the ISO-standardized laboratory of Bach Mai hospital.

Results: Prolonged fever, headache, neck stiffness were present in 100% of patients; average hospitalization time was 20.4 ± 8.8 days. Cerebrospinal fluid showed increased neutrophils. No patients had positive AFB smear in cerebrospinal fluid. MRI of the brain showed ventricular dilatation in 42.4%. Nodular lesions were commonly seen on X-ray.

Conclusions: Prolonged fever and impaired consciousness, ventricular dilatation were common symptoms. X-ray lesions were mainly nodular. AFB smear of cerebrospinal fluid was of little value.
