Objective: The study aimed at describing the situation of Health Education Communication (HEC) and associated factors in six provincial hospitals in Long An province.

Methods: This cross-sectional study using quantitative and qualitative methods conducted in six provincial hospitals in Long An province from February to June 2016. Quantitative data, including plans, reports, documents, decisions, and HEC facilities, were analyzed by Excel. Qualitative information from 18 in-depth interviews and 06 focus group discussions were analyzed by themes.

Results: Results showed that 100% of personel doing HEC activities in the six hospitals were part-time, HEC facilities reached only 45% of the regulation and finance was limited. However, the activities still reached 88.3%, quality of activities were 91.7% compared to the scale of Long An Health Education Communication Center. The associated factors included lack of coordination among health staff in implementing HEC activities, lack of equipment and facilities, and shortage of financing.

Conclusion: Expenditure on health education communication should be set aside, cadre encouragement mechanism, equipment investment, staff recruitment, collaborative mechanism, activity monitoring and supervision, training and re-training on health education skill, communication for cadres should be strengthened.
