Objective: The study assesses malnutrition and identifies factors related to malnutrition in children aged 6-24 months in Tan Tuc commune, Thanh Tri district, Soc Trang province.
Methods: Cross-sectional study describing 243 infants and mothers of children aged 6-24 months in Tan Tuc commune, Thanh Tri district, Soc Trang province was conducted.
Results: The rate of underweight, stunting and wasting in children aged 6-24 months was 13.2%, 27.2% and 7.4%, respectively. Males had higher rates of malnutrition than females in all three groups (p> 0.05). Children whose age group is from 12 to 17 month old had the highest rate of malnutrition (p> 0.05). The prevalence of three malnutrition types among Khmer children is higher than that of Kinh children, with a significantly higher rate of stunting (p <0.05). Babies with birth weight <2500g, having diarrhea in the last two weeks, are at higher risk for malnutrition than other children (OR 3.7, 3.1). In addition, there was a correlation between the level of education, the occupation of the mother, the timing of supplemental feeding with child malnutrition (OR 2.6; 4.4; 2.6).
Conclusions: It is necessary to strengthen the communication and dissemination of knowledge appropriate for each target group, especially mothers having low education level and ethnic minority people at the time of initiation of complementary feeding, knowledge of childcare when the child gets sick.
