ABSTRACT
Fungal infections contribute significantly to the opportunistic infections that threaten people with late-stage HIV infection. Commonly pathogens including Pneumocystis jiroveciiis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Talaromyces marneffei and Candida spp. Globally, invasive fungal infections constitute a significant cause of HIV-related death. Despite widespread use of combination antiretroviral treatment, up to 1 million people die each year from IFIs, which might account for half of all AIDS-related fatalities. We review epidemiology of these important systemic fungal pathogens, as well as the advances made in their identification and treatment in HIV patients.
