Introduction: Vietnam had more than 1391 cases of COVID-19 by 12 December 2020, however, data about the clinical and management of COVID-19 patients were poorly described.

Objectives: We present the clinical features, and outcomes of patients with confirmation of SAS-CoV-2 from January to April 2020 at a designated hospital in Vietnam.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observation analysis among COVID-19 patients enrolled to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi during the first wave of the outbreak, from January to April 18, 2020. We followed the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline for categorizing the severity of COVID-19, and the “Global COVID-19 Clinical Platform” for reporting the clinical features, laboratory results and treatment outcomes of participants.

Results: The most common symptoms during the entire hospitalization were fever (45%), dry cough (75%), cough with sputum production (26.7%) and sore throat (31.7%). We found no difference in vital signs at admission between mild cases and moderate/severe cases. Among moderate/severe patients, 81.8% had bilateral lung abnormalities on X-ray or computed tomography (CT) findings. We found 9 patients in moderate/severe group had the CD4 cell counts<500 cells/mm3, and none of them had HIV co-infected or had history of taking immunosuppressive drugs. The duration of asymptomatic and duration of two consecutive RT-PCR negatives of SARS-CoV-2 among moderate/severe cases were longer than mild cases. The overall estimated of viral clearance times was 7.5 days.

Conclusion: Our study described the clinical features and outcomes of COVID-19 patients during the first wave of the epidemic in Vietnam. The results might be useful for clinicians for improving the capacity of diagnose and treatment of COVID-19 in Vietnam.
