Introduction: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are a high-risk group for COVID-19 infection.
Objectives: This paper aims to estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among HCWs from six most at risk departments of Bach Mai Hospital in 2020.
Material and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional serological survey among HCWs at Bach Mai Hospital from September to October 2020. We used the convenience sampling approach for recruiting participants. A total of 489 individual agreed to participate in the study. We used Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 serology test to detect SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among participants.
Results: The median age of HCW was 32 years old (IQR 27 – 40). More than half of HCW were nurses (55.3%), followed by clinical doctor (22.9%), laboratory specialists (5.8%), and remaining were non-clinical staff. Using Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 serology test, we found only 2 HCW had positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Both of two cases were previously RT-PCR positive during the outbreak in March 2020.
Conclusion: Antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 were very low in 519 of health care staff at a major hospital in northern Vietnam. Although these findings are encouraging, it is critical to perform routine SARS-CoV-2 serological surveys of frontline health care staff to determine the risk of nosocomial infection.
