Hand hygiene compliance among health care workers and associated factors at the ICU – Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to assess hand hygiene compliance among healthcare workers in the Intensive Care Unit of the Poisoning Control Center at Bach Mai Hospital and explore factors associated with hand hygiene compliance.

Participants and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, observing a total of 325 hand hygiene opportunities among healthcare workers in the Intensive Care Unit of the Poisoning Control Center at Bach Mai Hospital.

Results: Out of the 325 observed hand hygiene opportunities, 198 (60.9%) hand hygiene actions were adhered to by the healthcare workers. Factors significantly associated with hand hygiene compliance included working experience of 6-10 years (OR = 2.72, 95% CI: 1.36-5.43), 11-15 years (OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.26-3.98), and more than 15 years (OR = 3.03, 95% CI: 1.54-5.94), being a nurse (OR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.18-3.01), and working during administrative shifts (OR = 2.40, 95% CI: 1.37-4.18).

Conclusion: The overall level of hand hygiene compliance among healthcare workers in the Intensive Care Unit of the Poisoning Control Center at Bach Mai Hospital was moderate. Working shift, years of working experience, and profession status of healthcare workers were found to be significantly associated with hand hygiene compliance. These findings suggest the need for targeted interventions to improve hand hygiene compliance, particularly among healthcare workers with less experience and during non-administrative working shifts.
