ABSTRACT

Objectives: To analyze the difference in care needs of patients with alcohol withdrawal syndrome on the first and 7th day of inpatient treatment at the National Institute of Mental Health.

Methods: We conducted a aross-sectional study among 126 alcoholic inpatients at the National Institute of Mental Health who met the diagnostic criteria for alcohol withdrawal syndrome, excluding those with other substance abuse or physical illnesses; the cross-sectional study conducted patient interviews on the first and seventh hospital days (or discharge day if under 7 days) regarding their general status, consciousness, perception, thought processes, withdrawal symptoms, and nursing care needs.

Results: During the first day of hospitalization, patients demonstrated substantial nursing care requirements, including sensory and perceptual disturbances in 46% of samples, seizure precautions in 14.3%, delirium monitoring in 23%, and multiple daily vital sign assessments in 33%. However, after 7 days of treatment, the patient's condition changed markedly, and the need for care was greatly reduced: sensory and perceptual disorders were only 14.3%, 1.6% of patients needed to be monitored and in the danger of seizure, 4.8% of patients need to be monitored delirium, 3.2% of patients need to monitor vital signs multiple times a day.

Conclusions: Patients have extremely poor self-care ability initially needing intensive nursing care, but after 7 days of treatment, care needs decrease significantly, proving nurses' vital role in enabling alcohol withdrawal patients' swift improvement.
