Missed opportunities for vaccination in healthcare settings: A review of literature

ABSTRACT

Missed opportunities for vaccination (MOV) occur when eligible individuals have contact with the healthcare system but do not receive recommended vaccines. This review examines the prevalence, contributing factors, impact, and strategies to reduce MOV in healthcare settings. MOV are common across various settings and can substantially impact vaccination coverage and disease burden. Strategies to reduce MOV include provider education, patient reminders, EHR alerts, standing orders, and immunization information systems. Implementing these strategies can improve vaccination rates and minimize the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases.
