ABSTRACT
Objectives: To report a case of psychogenic vomiting in a patient with previously misdiagnosed generalized anxiety disorder.
Case presentation: A 17-year-old female patient with no prior health issues was hospitalized due to vomiting and restlessness. Six months prior to hospital admission, the patient exhibited signs of excessive worry, accompanied by episodes of restlessness and nervousness. One month after hospitalization, the patient's vomiting frequency increased to 10-15 times per day, occurring 5-10 minutes after eating, without any accompanying nausea. Initially, the patient vomited the recently consumed food, without blood stains, and later experienced dry heaving or vomiting small amounts of fluid. The patient sought examination and treatment at the Gastroenterology and Cardiology departments, but her condition showed minimal improvement. Subsequently, she was transferred to the Psychiatric department, where her symptoms were effectively managed, and she was discharged after 33 days of treatment.
Conclusion: This case represents an uncommon presentation of psychogenic vomiting, with symptoms that can easily lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. The case highlights the challenges in accurately diagnosing and effectively treating psychogenic vomiting.
